We will explain what you should do if you are concerned about yourself or a colleague as an independent training provider delivering government funded programs we have a legal duty to prioritize safeguarding on. We recognize that a safe and confident learner is a successful learner. Your health and well being are important to us. So what? ISS Safeguarding, safeguarding of the term we use when we act to protect the health well being and rights of individuals, both adults and Children should be able to live a life free from physical abuse, from emotional abuse from sexual abuse and from neglect. Let's first of all, look at the legal definition of safeguarding Children and by Children. We mean anyone who hasn't yet reached their 18th birthday. So safeguarding Children means protecting them from maltreatment, preventing impairment off their physical and mental health or well being, ensuring that they grow up in circumstances consistent with the provisions off safe on defective care on, most importantly, taking action to enable all Children toe have the best outcomes. Whether you are a young person yourself or apparent with Children under the age of 18, or whether you engage with Children outside of work, it is reassuring to know that laws and guidance exist to protect them from abuse on who knows? At some point in your career, you may be responsible for younger apprentices yourself, usually aged between 16 and 18, so considered to be Children. And therefore understanding safeguarding is never irrelevant. Whatever you're wrong, it is important that we understand that adults to need safeguarding, particularly those that are vulnerable. So let's look at the definition of safeguarding vulnerable adults, and the's are people who are over the age of 18. So safeguarding adults means protecting the health well being on human rights of adults who are a risk enabling them to live safely free from abuse and neglect. It also means people and organizations working together to prevent a reduced both the risks and experience of abuse or neglect. So what do we mean by a vulnerable adult care? Act? 2014 defines a vulnerable adult as someone who has need for care and support someone who is experiencing or is at risk off abuse or neglect someone who is unable to protect himself or herself against the abuse or neglect or the risk off it on The key word here is capacity does the does the person have the capacity to understand that what is happening to them is wrong. Does the person have the capacity to seek help? Of course, anyone of us can become vulnerable at any time. Circumstances can change, such as the loss of a job or redundancy, which may then lead to financial difficulties. This would make us vulnerable or our physical and mental health could deteriorate on again. This could make us vulnerable and in need of care and support. Sadly, some may be living with domestic violence or family members who are struggling with their own physical or mental health or even addiction. So remember, if you feel that you are not coping or something happens, which impacts on your ability to engage with the course, seek help. The four main types of abuse that we listed earlier generally take place in the home on the perpetrators unknown to the victims. They're all, however, many other risks that Children and vulnerable adults face. As you can see from the list. Being aware of these risks and understanding what to do if you are worried may just help to save someone's life. Let's expand on this a little more bullying for example, is a terrible experience for anyone on can leave permanent scars on the victims. It can, of course, take place at work on your organization should have policies in place to deal with this. No one should have to tolerate harassment or victimization at work. Poor mental health can have a huge impact on a person's while being. In addition to the health service, there are many organizations that can help. So if you are worried about yourself or a colleague, talk to your line manager or talk to your coach about it. And as we go further down the list, it is important to understand that the Maura where we are of all of these risks, the more likely it is that the perpetrators will be held to account on prosecuted. You will see that we've included in this list radicalization. This is the process by which an individual or group comes to adopt increasingly radical views in opposition toe a political, social or religious status quo. Vulnerable young people and adults are particularly at risk of being radicalized. If there are factors in their upbringing that would lead them to feel aggrieved and angry with their lives, and those around them. We will look at radicalization in a little more detail later. So some of you may be wondering why it is so important for us to be discussing safeguarding at this stage in your life or the stage in your career. After all, Uran adult on Surely you're able to look after yourself. Well, fortunately, that is the case for the large majority of us. But there will be the odd learner who, through no fault of their own, finds themselves in a situation which impacts on their lives so significantly that engagement in learning becomes almost impossible. To demonstrate this further, let's introduce a little psychology. Those of you that have studied or have dabbled in psychology will be familiar with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The theory states that humans are motivated to fulfill their needs in a hierarchical order. This order begins with the basic needs before moving on to more advanced needs. So, in simple terms, if basic needs such as food, shelter, personal safety, love and belonging are not met, then there will be little or no motivation to improve one status or to become the most that you can be. The desire to improve yourself by learning and gaining qualifications is only going to be possible. If you are healthy and you feel safe, anything that interferes with that will become a barrier to your learning. We understand how sometimes life can just get in the way. So if you are worried, talk to your line manager or your coach. We are all here to help you succeed. We have briefly mentioned unacceptable situations in the workplace, but this, of course, is not limited to bullying. It can also include someone trying to inflict their extreme ideologies on you. Harassment or victimization? Exploitation on, of course, unacceptable health and safety conditions or activities. Again, your organization should have policies in place to deal with such situations. But if you're worried, talk to your line manager or your coach. As the majority of your learning will take place online, it is important to understand how to stay safe when accessing learning platforms on when joining online learning support groups. As you may be aware, every year, intelligent, responsible adults are scammed, so having secure social media sites is really important. It's also important to recognize when approach may be suspicious on our your tutors and your coaches have all been trained in safeguarding on. They follow a staff code of conduct. We expect them to behave professionally online, Andi within certain protocols, and we also expect our learners to do the same again. If you have any concerns, please report it as part of this session. And as previously mentioned, we want to introduce the prevent duty to you on Explain why it is important for all of our learners to be aware of the risks of radicalization. The prevent duty was introduced in 2015 and is one of the four elements of the counterterrorism strategy aimed to eradicate terror attacks. The other three elements are pursue, protect and prepare. The education sector is one of the specified authorities who must do everything they can to prevent learners from becoming radicalized. This means us all being aware off the factors that can lead to radicalization. For example, someone who is struggling with a sense of identity, someone who may be isolated from their peer group or from the UK culture, somebody who may have family tensions or they may be questioning their place in society, have low self esteem or have a sense of injustice. We must also be aware of the signs that a person may be a risk, for example, someone who is becoming increasingly argumentative, unwilling to listen to different viewpoints. They may be becoming abusive to colleagues who are different. Embracing conspiracy theorists, changing friends and appearance converted to a new religion. Increased and secretive online activity. If you become aware of a colleague who's behavior is concerning, then do the right thing and tell someone part of the prevent duty is ensuring that all learners are aware, often understand British values. These were introduced a the same time as the prevent duty on are intended to provide a set of values which, if followed, would ensure that no one engages with extreme ideologies the British values, our democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, a mutual respect for on tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. And for those without faith, arguably, any civilized society should have these values in place. Now, if we apply these values to the workplace, you will find policies and procedures which should reinforce them. For example, there may be a staff code of conduct, equality and diversity policies on DSO fourth, all of which embraced British values. So now that we have discussed and explained why safeguarding is important to us all, let's look at data loss support team. Specific contact details will be provided to you by your coach Data law. Have appointed a designated safeguarding lead under deputy who together will oversee or safeguarding concerns. Your first point of contact, however, should be your coach. If appropriate, we will work with your line manager to resolve issues and provide support. If it is not appropriate to contact your employer, we will sign post you to other support agencies on do our best to help. So if you are concerned either about yourself or a colleague, tell someone no matter how small the concern, it is important to discuss it on. Tell someone we are all trained to deal with safeguarding concerns. You can choose to tell the designated safeguarding lead or the deputy, your coach or your line manager, and where appropriate, we will work with your employer to resolve the matter. So let's just summarize what we've discussed in the session. Understanding. Safeguarding is important no matter your age or your job role. Remember at some point in your life. You may be responsible for a team of staff, including under eighteens on potentially vulnerable adults on May have safeguarding responsibilities. Remember, it is important to report concerns as they may be part of a bigger picture on. Finally, we are here to help. Thank you for listening and good luck with your course.
